Being a FAN or a FOLLOWER is something that is still very foreign to me. In my youth, I had friends who were FANS. One girl was so into following the latest Pop Teen Heartthrobs that she clipped out pictures from Fan Magazines and taped them up all over her walls. She read all about those young men and memorized a lot of random facts. She collected all of their recordings and begged her parents to let her go to their concerts. As I watched what she'd do, it seemed like she was swallowed up in a mania. Where I may have enjoyed their music, I still had no desire to be a fan like that.
Don't get me wrong, as a performer I appreciate applause as much as anyone else. I just get nervous in big crowds and would go to great lengths to avoid being in one. Hearing about the bad things that happen to performers because of the adulation of fans also worries me. I have never wanted to be a part of that on any level.
Then they make the case that "it's just what you have to do nowadays." In order to allow your products to stand out, you need good branding. It needs to be unique to stand out from the crowds. It needs to reflect YOUR PERSONALITY.
Perhaps if I was younger, I would be accustomed to "how things just have to be done nowadays." Then again, I like to think that I am mostly offering my products as a service, and people are willing to pay me fairly to cover my expenses and because they appreciate my work. (Is that so naive?)
Maybe I am just an old dog who will never learn new tricks.
