“But Grandma said...”
I remember this happening to my son Michael in his Kindergarten class many years ago. He had drawn a portrait of his family with all of the members. The teacher explained to me at Parent/Teacher Conference that the children were learning to be aware of how to draw and color all of the various body parts. Then she told me that she had to correct Michael because he had colored in my eyes yellow. “And of course, no one has yellow eyes, “ she said.
“I do.”
The teacher was taken aback. “No...really...uh...”
“Take a good look.” I adjusted my seat to take advantage of the light.
The teacher looked closely at my eyes, and then began to apologize profusely. “I didn’t know...uh...I’ve never seen anyone...uh...I mean, with yellow eyes before... uh... I will have to apologize to Michael.”
Growing up, my daddy called me “Orange Eyes” or “Amber Eyes.” Those were his pet names for me. Personally, I always thought I had golden cat eyes. At any rate, I had told little Megan that she and I were in an exclusive club. The Golden Eye Club has very few members and that’s why it is so special to be a member. Too bad we are rarely believed!
