How Gentle God's Commands - Arranged by Betsy Lee Bailey
Text: Philip Doddridge, 1702-1751, Music: Hans Georg Nageli, 1773-1836
How gentle Gods commands!
How kind His precepts are!
Come cast your burdens on the Lord
And trust His constant care.
Beneath His watchful eye,
His Saints securely dwell;
That hand which bears all nature up
Shall guard His children well.
Why should this anxious load
Press down your weary mind?
Haste to your Heavenly Father's throne
And sweet refreshment find.
His goodness stands approved,
Unchanged from day to day.
I'll drop my burden at His feet
And bear a song away.
I'll drop my burden at His feet
And bear a song away.
About the Song - One of my vocal students asked me to create an arrangement for her. She wanted to sing this hymn, and I wanted to allow her to show off her beautiful voice a bit. Even though "How Gentle God's Commands" was written during the Baroque period, I wanted to breathe new life into it by creating a more modern accompaniment. The pianist gets to go on quite a fun adventure throughout the piece, too.
