Words and Music by Betsy Lee Bailey
On a sacred, still and silent night
When the heav'ns were hushed with breathless waiting,
In a mean and lowly stall the Lord of All was born that first Christmas night.
Suddenly a hillside shone with great light!
Angel choirs resounded with glorious praising!
Shepherds left their flocks and hastened to find the Child who was born that first Christmas night.
Angels stood watch o'er that blessed holy Babe,
Born in a stable and in a manger laid.
For God so loved us, He sent His only Begotten Son, Atoning One.
Still, when we recall that holy night,
When the God of Love sent down our Salvation,
Joyously our praises sing to our Savior and King who was born that first Christmas night.
Christ was born that first Christmas night.
When the heav'ns were hushed with breathless waiting,
In a mean and lowly stall the Lord of All was born that first Christmas night.
Suddenly a hillside shone with great light!

Born in a stable and in a manger laid.

Still, when we recall that holy night,
When the God of Love sent down our Salvation,
Joyously our praises sing to our Savior and King who was born that first Christmas night.
Christ was born that first Christmas night.
About the Song: Premiered at the Festival Lights Series at the Washington D.C. Temple Visitor's Center, this song has become a favorite Christmas song for the Bailey's, Bullock's, and Perry's. Our three large families, including our 17 children, their spouses and grandchildren and a few special friends had the privilege of doing a Christmas Show there each Christmas for 5 years. On the recording, Mary Bullock played violin, Kathryn Rock played piano, and Matthew Bailey played guitar. For the show, Leslie Perry performed a beautiful interpretive lyrical dance.
Note: In the published score there are a few typographical errors I'd like to point out.
1. The tempo should be marked at 116. It should be sung with a buoyant, dance-like character.
2. In measure 15, the second alto note should be an F#.
3. In measure 49, the third alto note should be a G flat.
4. In measure 78, the basses and tenors double the G, then the basses follow the piano bass notes down in measures 79. 80, and 81. So the basses should sing G, F, E and D in measures 78-81, keeping the same words and rhythms as written.
