Live by the Light of His Love - words and music by Betsy Lee Bailey

When the Savior taught by the shores of Galillee
In His words of love, He told people how to be.
He said, "I am the Light and the Life, Come follow me."
Oh, then, live by the light of His love.

Oh, how blessed are they who will walk in righteous ways;
Who will love and serve and endure through all their days;
Who will trust in the Lord and delight to sing His praise;
Who will live by the light of His love.

Though temptations may beckon me to stray from my course,
I will valiantly follow the Lord.

So, I will choose the right.
I'll give love and service, too.
I will hold steadfast to the things I know are true.
I will learn what the Savior would have me say and do.
I will live by the light of His love.

In the promised land, to righteous anciently,
When the Lord appeared and they worshipped at His knee,
He said, "I am the Law and the Light.  Look unto me."
Oh, then, live by the light of His love.

Oh, how blessed are they who are meek and pure in heart;
Who receive His name and commit to do their part;
Who will keep His commandments then blessings freely start
As they live by the light of His love.

Though temptations may beckon me to stray from my course,
I will valiantly follow the Lord.

So, I will choose the right.
I'll give love and service, too.
I will hold steadfast to the things I know are true.
I will learn what the Savior would have me say and do.
I will live by the light of His love.
I will live by the light of His love.

           Winner of the Award of Merit, children's song category, of the Church Music Submissions 2003

About the Song - I had this little tune running and running through my mind for days and days.  Finally, I wrote it down, but no words came.  I played the tune for my sister and she said that it should be a children's song.  Then the words spilled out.  I had been studying the Savior's Sermon on the Mount, comparing the version in the New Testament with the version in the Book of Mormon.  There are subtle yet distinct differences. The ones that struck me the most are included in the lyrics of the first verse when Christ said, "I am the Light and the Life, come follow me," and in the second verse, "I am the Law and the Light, look unto me."

            Because this song has many, many words, I think it is more suited to the Young Women as a solo or unison chorus song.
